The Doctor of Biblical Studies (D.B.S.)
The Doctor of Biblical Studies (D.B.S.) at Caribbean College of the Bible International and Theological Seminary is an innovative program designed to develop one as a life-long student and scholar of the Word of God. It is a forty semester-hour program designed for a practical approach and application.

The Doctoral candidate is required to demonstrate competence in a variety of disciplines through projects, research and a 30,000 word dissertation.

The dissertation will be the culmination of the student's entire program of study. This is a scholarly paper presenting the student's complete knowledge, theories and practical approach of a given topic. Two bound copies are required. There will be no credit given in semester hours for this dissertation.

Lecture (tapes), commentary assignments and/or research projects are included, with examinations over lectures and/or the commentary portion of study. In some courses there will be an additional textbook with appropriate assignments.

All work for a particular course is to be completed and returned for grading at the same time.

The Doctoral program is designed for a two year duration with four blocks of 12 semester hours each. This is considered a full load due to the intensity of the study program. However, it is conceivable that a student can complete the course in less time. Should a student not be able to finish the course of study in two years, he/she may request additional time.

A grade point average of 3.0 (B) is required for all candidates for the D.B.S. program. The Doctor of Biblical Studies differs from more recent programs, in that it stresses what is right about the Bible, rather than what is wrong. This course is designed to build a strong spiritual life within the student. While there are a number of textbooks, taped lectures and teaching guides for this degree, the major textbook will be the Bible throughout the curriculum.

Advanced Requirements

A Master's Degree consisting of a minimum of 64 semester credit hours from an approved school.

Formal application with a recent close-up photo.

A formal transcript from all colleges attended previously.

All students who did not receive a Master's Degree from CCBI may be required to take necessary pre-requisite courses on the CCBI Master Degree level before entering the Doctoral Degree level. This will be determined when transcripts are received.

Course Descriptions

706 THE PENTATEUCH - This is an historical expository of the first five books of the Bible. What is the application of the law then and now, and how does it relate to the N.T. law of grace.

707 HISTORICAL BOOKS - This is a detailed study of the historical section of the O.T. beginning with Joshua and continuing through Esther. This course offers the contemporary preacher and teacher of the Bible untapped resources for sharing the timeless message of God's sovereignty and grace.

708 HEBREW POETRY & WISDOM LITERATURE - This course focuses on the books, which largely compose the third division of the Hebrew canon including Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Job, and Song of Solomon. Psalms will be studied devotionally.

709 MAJOR & MINOR PROPHETS - An in-depth study both historical and exegetical analysis of the message and significance of the Major and Minor O.T. Prophets.

710 SYNOPTIC GOSPELS - This course is designed to deal with the synoptic problem through and exegetical, cultural, expository and applicable manner.

712 NEW TESTAMENT GREEK - Comments, explanations and pronunciation on tapes by Spiro Zodiates augment the textbook for this foundation course to enable direct interpretation of the New Testament.

713 Basic Biblical Hebrew: This course provides the student with a basic understanding of classical Hebrew grammar and builds a foundation for further study of the Hebrew Old Testament.  Although at the completion of this course the student will not be an expert in Hebrew he would definitely be able to translate simple sentences.  It starts with the basics – the Hebrew alphabet and fundamentals of pronunciation, and grades the student step by step through the Hebrew grammar.  The emphasis is on the application of the language in exegesis.

714 Advanced New Testament Greek: This course is based on the assumption that the student has had an elementary study of the Greek language as a foundation.  Advanced Greek provides the student with a thorough understanding of the New Testament Greek grammar. The student will be given a grammatical principle and then required to translate the passages where that principle is evident.  A pre-text is given to test the student’s knowledge of Greek before this course is undertaken.

804 DIRECTED THEOLOGY RESEARCH - This is a directed, independent study of the students' preference in the area of preaching, administration, church growth, or counseling.

806 BOOK OF ACTS - This course will deal in-depth with the drama from the coming of the Holy Spirit through rapid fire movement of the church into centers of influence and culture in the then-known world. This course is a combination exegesis and contemporary application.

808 PAULINE LITERATURE - The life and teachings of the Apostle Paul based on a careful analysis of the Pauline epistles beginning with Romans and continuing through Philemon.

810 HEBREW AND GENERAL EPISTLES - An intensive study of N.T. epistles from Hebrews through Jude.

814 THE BOOK OF REVELATION - The study of this book is both challenging and spiritually uplifting.

856 DOCTORAL DISSERTATION - This 30,000-word paper (approximately 150 pages pica or 135 pages elite type) must be a scholarly thesis including proper foot notation and an extensive bibliography of a minimum of 75 different works. The writing project should represent the culmination of the candidate's educational and practical experience. The subject must deal exclusively with his/her major area of study. The proposal, outline and sample bibliography must be presented for approval no later than halfway through the Doctoral program. The college will keep the original; student should retain at least one copy for their own security.
